At my husband's family gathering, my stepdaughter called me 'the hired help' as everyone laughed. My husband said nothing. When his mom told me to apologize or leave, I walked out and left behind something that turned their world upside down.
Betty was the first to see the trouble coming. She grabbed the auditor's report and looked for the page with her address. Four years ago, when she couldn't pay her mortgage and property taxes, I'd lent her five hundred thousand dollars.
The loan was secured by a deed of trust on her beach house. I'd never asked for repayment, but the deal said she had to keep insurance and pay taxes on time. Tom had always told me he was taking care of it. The brown envelope had a formal notice of default.
'You said she'd never enforce this,' Betty whispered.
Tom looked around the cabin. The relatives who'd laughed at me were now looking at their drinks and plates. 'She won't,' he said. 'Emma gets emotional, but she always comes back.'
Then the process server walked in. He gave Tom the divorce papers and gave Lily a notice to keep all her messages, emails, bank records, and phone info.
Tom pulled Lily towards the parking lot, but Betty followed. 'What did you do with Emma's account?' 'It wasn't stealing,' Lily said quickly. 'The transfer didn't go through.' 'Why were you moving her money?' Lily looked at Tom.
'The business needed some quick cash,' he answered.
A minute later, Jake rushed out of the kitchen with his phone. 'Our business account is frozen,' he said. 'Payroll is due Wednesday.'
Tom called the bank and demanded the freeze be lifted. The bank manager calmly told him that Harris Construction had broken its credit agreement. My personal guarantee was gone. The attempted transfer was being investigated.
The company needed new collateral to get more money.
Tom looked down the road, waiting for me to come back and save him. I was already on a plane to Seattle.
My best friend, Sarah Lee, met me at the airport. She was a family - law lawyer and the only one who'd believed me when I first said money was missing.
Eight months ago, I noticed small withdrawals from an account Tom had no right to use. Fifteen thousand dollars for new tools. Twelve thousand for an urgent subcontractor payment. Twenty thousand as a short - term loan.
All together, the withdrawals added up to two hundred thousand dollars. Tom said he knew nothing about it.
Then my office camera caught him taking pictures of my banking details. I changed the access codes and set up a new monitored account. Tom took pictures of the new info too. Two days later, Lily logged in and tried to transfer nine hundred thousand dollars.
That's the proof Sarah needed.
At her place, I turned my phone back on. There were a hundred and two missed calls. Tom's messages started with anger. 'You embarrassed me in front of my family.' 'Payroll is due. Good employees might lose their jobs.' 'Emma, I love you.
We can work this out.' Not one message said sorry for the paper plate. He never mentioned Lily's insult. He never explained why he'd been in my office or given his daughter access to my money.
The financial auditor soon found something even worse. Only four hundred thousand dollars of the planned transfer was for the business. The other five hundred thousand was going into a new account only Tom controlled. He'd been planning to leave me.
His plan was to take my money, stabilize the company for a while, hide the rest, and file for divorce before I found out.
Three days later, Tom showed up at Sarah's Seattle office. He was wearing the same gray jacket from the gathering, but his confidence was gone. Sarah wouldn't let him in. 'I need ten minutes alone with my wife,' he insisted.
'Your wife has a lawyer now.' 'It became a legal issue when you got her private banking details.' Tom said he'd taken nothing. Sarah reminded him that the bank had records showing Lily used the codes. He sat in the lobby for half an hour, waiting.
But he was too late. I was done with their family and their games.
