After Leo and Ivy tied the knot, life took on a new and delightful rhythm. Ivy danced while making pancakes, and she made broccoli seem like “tiny superhero trees” to Ella.

Conversations filled the air instead of silence. Leo's mom whispered during a visit, “So this is what laughter sounds like again.”

However, there were still those unexplained moments. One morning, after Ivy braided Ella's hair, the little girl stood silently in front of Luna's photograph.

Another evening, Ivy tucked Ella into bed. But five minutes later, Ella walked into Leo's room, carrying her blanket.

Leo knew exactly which mommy she meant, so he played Luna's lullaby. Ella smiled, hugged her stuffed rabbit, and fell asleep.

This happened again the next week. Whenever Ivy and Ella had a happy moment, Ella would search for Luna afterward.

Leo assumed it was part of growing up. Ivy worried she'd done something wrong. “She pulls away when we get close,” she said.

“She's adjusting,” Leo replied. But neither of them really understood what was going on.

One night, Leo invited his parents and sister for dinner. Ivy spent the afternoon cooking a delicious meal.

Ella insisted on helping set the table, and Ivy quietly fixed her mistakes. The family was having a great time.

Then. Out of the blue. Ella pointed at Ivy. Called her a “monster.” Everyone at the table was shocked.

Leo forced a laugh, but it sounded hollow. He asked Ella why she'd say such a thing.

Ella's words were like ice water. She said, “When I love Ivy, Luna starts fading.”

The Family Dinner

Last night, Leo invited his parents and younger sister over for dinner. It wasn't a big celebration, just a chance for his family to see life was getting better.

Ivy spent the afternoon cooking. The smell of roasted chicken filled the house. Fresh bread cooled on the counter. And an apple pie waited under a towel.

Ella, now four, was bright and observant. She insisted on helping set the table, and Ivy quietly fixed her mistakes without a word.

When the doorbell rang, Ella ran to answer. Leo's mom scooped her into a hug, and his dad walked in with flowers.

His sister inhaled dramatically. Said. "If dinner tastes half as good as this house smells. I'm moving in.".

She convinced Ella that peas were tiny planets. And soon they were launching vegetables across the table with "whoosh". sounds.

Ivy laughed until tears formed in her eyes. Watching her with the family, Leo thought how well she fit into their lives.

Ivy placed warm apple pie in front of everyone before sitting down. Leo's mom looked around the table, her eyes shining.

She said, "I haven't seen this house this happy in years. I know nobody could replace Luna, but I'm grateful for you, Ivy."

The room fell into a warm silence. Then a chair scraped sharply across the floor. Ella pointed directly at Ivy.

Leo's sister lowered her fork. Ivy froze with one hand on her coffee cup. Leo forced a hollow laugh.

Leo asked, "Why would you call Ivy a monster?" Ella looked at him with wide, frightened eyes and whispered her reason.

Understanding Ella's Fear

Leo was stunned by Ella's words. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks. He had been so focused on moving forward that he'd missed her pain.

Ella twisted the edge of her dress, her voice trembling. "When Ivy hugs me, I forget what Luna's hugs felt like," she confessed.

Leo's heart ached. He thought he was protecting her, but he'd only made her fear losing the memory of Luna.

Ivy's eyes welled up. She finally understood why Ella pulled away after their happy moments. It wasn't rejection.

Leo felt a wave of guilt. All the times he'd avoided talking about Luna came back to haunt him.

Ella continued, "In stories, monsters make people disappear. I'm scared Ivy will make Luna fade."

Ivy stood up and walked into the living room. Leo feared she was heartbroken, but she returned with Luna's photo.

She placed the photo on an empty chair. "Your mommy gets a seat too," she said, her voice soft.

Ivy then pulled her chair back. "I don't want anyone to disappear. I've never wanted Luna's place," she added.

She turned to Ella. "Would you tell me something about your mommy?" she asked gently.

Leo joined in, sharing funny stories about Luna. Ella listened, her eyes brightening with each tale.

For the first time in years, they didn't shy away from Luna's name. She was back in the room, in their hearts.

Ella climbed onto Ivy's lap. "You still love me?" she whispered. Ivy kissed her head. "Very much," she replied.

Embracing the Past and the Present

As the days passed. Ivy made a conscious effort to make Luna a part of their family in a beautiful way. She started by placing Luna's favorite flowers in the living room.

One evening, Ivy sat Ella down and said, “Your mommy was so wonderful. Let's talk about her more often.” Ella's eyes lit up.

The three of them would then gather around and share stories about Luna. Ella would giggle at the tales of her mother's silly moments.

Leo watched with a warm heart as Ivy and Ella bonded over Luna. It felt like the missing piece was finally being put back.

Ivy made sure to include Luna in their daily routines. She'd say, “Your mommy would have loved this sunny day.”

Ella would nod and add, “Luna loved playing outside.” The connection to her mother was growing stronger.

On special occasions, they'd set a place for Luna at the table. It was a simple yet powerful gesture.

Ivy would tell Ella, “Your mommy is always with us in spirit.” Ella would smile and feel reassured.

As time went on, Ella no longer felt the fear of losing her mother's memory. She embraced Ivy's love whole - heartedly.

Ivy also found ways to honor Luna. She started cooking some of Luna's favorite dishes, and the house was filled with delicious smells.

One day, Ella ran up to Ivy and gave her a big hug. “I love you, and I know Luna loves you too,” she said.

Ivy's eyes welled up with tears. “I love you both,” she replied, and they stood there in a warm embrace.

The family had finally found a way to love and remember everyone. They were a beautiful blend of the past and the present.
