The Unfair Vacation

After five long years of fertility treatments, I finally got pregnant with triplets.

When the doctor detected the third heartbeat, my husband, Mark, cried next to me.

He kept saying he couldn't believe we were going to have three babies.

When Ava, Leo, and Noah were born, they were small, fussy, and just perfect.

The delivery was tough, and my recovery was even worse.

But once we got home, almost all the responsibilities fell on me.

I took care of feedings, bottles, diapers, laundry, cooking, cleaning, and endured countless sleepless nights.

Mark went back to work and acted like just earning a paycheck was his entire parenting job.

One night, I was sitting on the bathroom floor, munching on half a granola bar.

My hands were shaking from exhaustion.

Ava was wailing.

Leo had just dozed off.

Noah had wet through another outfit.

"Can you make them stop crying? I have an early meeting," Mark asked.

"There are three babies and only one of me," I replied.

"Please help."

"What do you think I do here?" he said.

"You're a stay - at - home mom. The house and babies are your responsibility."

Mark glanced towards the nursery but didn't move to go in.

"It's different. You don't have to go to an office."

Two days later, Mark walked into the kitchen, smiling at his phone.

"Dan found a rental near the beach," he announced.

"For our trip. Dan, Tom, and me. Five days. We leave tomorrow."

That's when I saw his suitcase by the front door.

"You booked a five - day vacation without asking me?"

I asked.

"Tom arranged it weeks ago," Mark shrugged like it was no big deal.

I looked over at the living room where all three babies needed me.

"Then we need to arrange help for me. I can't take care of three infants alone for five days."

"I work and pay the bills. I deserve a break," he said.

The kitchen fell completely silent.

The Realization and a Desperate Situation

I could hardly believe my ears.

I take care of these three babies day in and day out.

I quit my job because we agreed I'd be a stay - at - home mom.

And I'm the one footing all the bills.

I almost died giving birth to the triplets.

But Mark acts like it's no big deal.

"I'm going, Lisa. You haven't earned a break, and I'm done arguing," he said.

For months, I'd been trying to make him understand how tired and alone I felt.

That afternoon, I finally got it.

He just didn't care enough to lend a hand.

The next morning, his friends showed up, honking from the driveway.

Dan held one of the babies long enough to snap a photo, then handed her back quickly so she wouldn't mess his shirt.

"Try not to make me feel bad while I'm gone," he joked.

"I don't have the energy to make you feel anything," I replied.

He kissed the baby's head, grabbed his suitcase, and headed off to the beach.

The next day, I was getting ready to take the babies to their six - month medical checkup.

It was a struggle to dress them, pack the diaper bag, and secure all three carriers.

Then I reached for the car keys.

I searched the kitchen, my purse, and every drawer.

Both sets of keys were gone, even though Mark's friends had already picked him up.

There was music and laughter in the background when he answered the phone.

"Where are the car keys?"

I demanded.

"I didn't want you driving alone with all three babies," he said.

"You left me alone with them, but now you think you can control whether I leave the house? They have a medical appointment in forty minutes," I said.

"No. They've already waited weeks," he replied.

I looked at my children and finally saw what Mark had done.

Taking the keys wasn't about protection.

I hung up the phone and called my brother, Jake.

As soon as I told him the babies needed a ride, he said he was on his way.
