“It's completely real. ” “No,” Henry shook his head violently.

“Sarah would never do something like this. ” “Sarah hid shell companies from you,” Jake countered.

“Sarah helped her associates fake liquidity, and Sarah paid your doctor seventeen years ago, and the records connect everything.

” Henry stared at Grace, and the silence between them was huge. Then Grace asked the question with no mercy.

“Did you know about this? ” she asked. Henry's face crumpled in real horror.

“No. ” She searched his eyes, looking for the man she used to know.

Once, she had known every look on his face, from his impatience to his rare kind moments. This was different; this was pure fear. “I didn't know,” he said again, his voice breaking. “Grace, I swear on everything. ” “Don't,” she said, and the word stopped him. “Don't swear on anything, not your name, not your legacy,” she commanded.

He flinched as if the word “legacy” had become a real blade in his side.

The Chase and Confrontation

Luna stepped between them.

“The federal agents have been waiting for this evidence. ” Ben nodded.

“And the district attorney will have it by morning. ” Henry looked dazed at the hotel.

“Sarah went after the business assets too. ” “Then we find them before they escape,” Ben said. But Lily was looking through the glass doors at the ballroom.

“It's already too late,” she whispered. Everyone turned to look.

Inside the ballroom, past the wilted flowers and abandoned drinks, Sarah Black stood near the main exit. She was no longer calm. Her expensive diamonds were shaking at her throat, and her hair was loose. One hand held her leather clutch, and the other was pulling Ryan along. Ryan looked scared, while Sarah looked determined.

Then Grace saw it, a black car waiting at the curb with the engine running. Sarah was running. Sarah Black had spent seventeen years acting innocent. It had worked on everyone, from Henry, who mistook beauty for loyalty, to society, which mistook extreme wealth for goodness. But that night, as she dragged her son through the service corridor of the hotel, the mask was gone.

“Move,” she hissed at her son. Ryan stumbled behind her.

“Mom, the federal agents are already here. ” “Do you want to spend your life in a prison cell? ” she snapped at him.

“I didn't know it was this bad,” Ryan cried. Sarah spun around, her eyes wild with desperation.

“You never know anything until it ruins you,” she retorted.

Ryan stepped back, for the first time looking like a boy who wanted his mother to save him and a man who realized she might sacrifice him. The service door burst open, and Ben stood there with two federal agents. Sarah stopped so suddenly that Ryan crashed into her back. Ben's expression didn't change.

“Leaving so early? ” he asked. Sarah lifted her chin defiantly.

“Get out of my way right now. ” “No,” Ben said calmly.

“You have no authority over me,” Sarah shouted. The agent beside Ben showed his badge.

“But we most certainly do. ” Sarah's hand tightened around her clutch until her knuckles turned white. Ryan stepped away from her, his voice shaking.

“Mom, what did you do? ” She turned on him with anger.

“Everything I did, I did for your benefit.

” “No,” Henry's voice came from the hall behind them as he caught up. Sarah froze. Henry walked toward her slowly, with Grace and the others behind him. His face was as gray as stone.

“Not for him,” Henry said.

“You did it for yourself. ” Sarah laughed once, a harsh and ugly sound.

“You don't get to judge me, Henry. ” Henry stopped a few feet away.

“Did you poison her pregnancies? ” Sarah said nothing, her expression hard to read. Grace stepped forward, her calm more terrifying than anger.

“Did you poison my babies? ” Sarah's mouth twisted into a sneer.

“Poison is such an ugly word for a simple intervention. ” Lily gasped, and Luna lunged forward, but Ben caught her arm to hold her back. Grace didn't move from her spot.

Sarah's eyes sparkled with madness.

“I adjusted a few things because your precious doctor was drowning in gambling debt and I gave him a way out. ”
